The USB scanner in UltraAV helps protect your computer against potentially dangerous devices. Malware isn't exclusively received by downloading files from the Internet, they can also hide on memory sticks. When you plug an infected memory stick into your computer, the infection will spread to your computer.
This is where the USB scanner comes in. It will automatically scan any devices you plug into your computer for malware. It also offers additional safety features, such as preventing files from being opened, or preventing files from being written to the USB device.
Activating the USB Scan
The USB scanner was added in version 12.8 of the Ultra Antivirus application. Please make sure you are using version 12.8 or newer of UltraAV.
To reach the USB Scan, click on Security -> USB Scan.
There are three main parts to the USB scan:
Auto USB Scan: When activated, UltraAV will automatically scan any USB devices you plug into your computer.
USB Features: Allows you to more strictly control how your computer interacts with USB devices
USB Whitelist: By whitelisting a USB device, any USB device not whitelisted will be blocked from interacting with your computer.
USB Features
USB Features can be accessed by clicking on View USB Features on the main USB Scan page. This will allow you to control how your computer interacts with plugged in USB devices in order to better safeguard both your computer and USB devices.
USB Features has the following options:
Access Block: Plugged in USB devices will be mounted (they'll be visible on the computer and your computer will recognize it), but they can not be accessed.
Write Block: You'll be able to open files (such as documents or pictures) stored plugged in USB devices, but you will not be able to save or edit any files on them.
Execute Block: You will not be able to run any programs or code from the plugged in USB devices.
USB Whitelist
The USB Whitelist will allow you to whitelist specific USB devices. For example, let's say your computer is shared with your family. Adding devices to the USB Whitelist will prevent your children from plugging in random USB devices they might have found into your computer.
To access the USB Whitelist, click on View USB Whitelist on the main USB Scan page.
To add a device to the whitelist, first plug the USB device into your computer and make sure your computer recognizes it. Next, click on Add new device.
This will give you a list of plugged in USB drives. Select the drive you want to whitelist and give it a name, then click on Add USB to Whitelist
Your USB drive is now whitelisted.
To remove a whitelisted device, select the device(s) you wish to remove, and then click on Remove from Whitelist.
